What 2008 Graduates Are Saying:

Greene County Career and Technology Center (GCCTC) has greatly impacted my life. I chose to take the Drafting and Design class because of my great interest in drawing and my sense of creativity. Taking the Drafting class has allowed me to experience new horizons and abilities. I have been the Secretary Treasurer for the Drafting and Design School-to-Work Company Drafters Inc. for two years.

As the Secretary Treasurer I was responsible for a variety of duties. Some of these duties included, billing clients for Drafting services, receiving payment for services rendered, verifying timesheets, preparing pay orders, paying bills for materials purchased, updating time logs, and incoming and outgoing financial ledger. My job as the Secretary Treasurer required me to have contact with GCCTC’s business coordinator where I took pay orders and other information in order for the students to get paid for their work.

At the Greene County Career and Technology Center, I participated in different activities. I am a member of the National Technical Honor Society and SkillsUSA. During my junior and senior years, I was a member of the SkillsUSA Tech Prep State competition. In my junior year, we placed third in the State.

I worked hard in the Drafting and Design Class, and did my best to lead others by my example. I feel responsible and very confident about the work I did, and plan to attend Penn Commercial to strengthen my drafting abilities in order to become a successful member of the workforce.

When I began my studies in the Drafting class, I had the unique opportunity to be a part of the school-to-work program, Drafters Incorporated. Our company redrew maps for the Southwestern Pennsylvania Water Authority (SPWA) using CAD (computer aided drawing). As a Project Manager, my duties included: trouble shooting maps to make sure that they were correct, assigning drafting jobs to the employees (the other students in the program), and giving them time sheets when they began a job, collecting and checking the time sheets for accuracy and legibility and turning the time sheets in to the General Manager. If I had difficulty or questions concerning the maps from the SPWA, I called the SWPA district foreman and he gave me suggestions over the phone or came to the classroom and helped me one-on-one.

Last year the SPWA district foreman took me and two of my classmates on job site visits. This was extremely valuable because we got to see the actual sites that we had been drawing. Sometimes the paper maps given to us to redraw were very old and hard to read. I then generated a computerized map using AutoCAD 2007. For all of my hard work and dedication, I was promoted to General Manager for the 2007-2008 school year. As general manager, I prepared and tracked work orders, cataloged incoming and outgoing work, received completed timesheets from the project manager, submitted completed timesheets to the secretary/treasurer and handled any miscellaneous duties that were assigned to me. Interaction with my company clients helped me improve my communication skills.

In addition, I worked after school as a waitress and dishwasher at a local restaurant. I also worked for the Greensboro Volunteer Fire Department. The money that I earned paid my phone bill, car insurance and car payments for my 2006 Grand Am, which transported me to my jobs and school. My jobs have really helped me mature and have demonstrated to my supervisors that I am very reliable.

In high school, I was also a member of the National Technical Honor Society, Students Against Drunk Driving (S.A.D.D.) and SkillsUSA. This year I traveled to Hershe, PA for State competitions and competed as part of the Tech Prep Team. We placed third.

The years have passed and I finally realize that my self-confidence has grown. I can accomplish anything that I set my mind to do. At GCCTC certificate ceremony, I was the senior class speaker. I will never give up, nor do I think about giving up. I work hard at everything I do, and also give it my all. I am very proud of myself and my accomplishments.

Since my enrollment in the Drafting and Design class, I have never loved school so much and have enjoyed every second of my involvement in drafting! In June I graduated from the Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School and Greene County Career and Technology Center. My plans are to double major in Architectural and Mechanical Drafting at Pittsburgh Technical Institute. Furthering my education in drafting is important as I would like to work in the field and one day run a drafting business. As I gain experience in the various types of drafting, the more eager I become to set goals for myself and achieve them. Being a contributing member of Drafters’, Inc. has had a great impact of my life. It forced me to take on more responsibilities and discipline myself; procrastination is a weakness to be conquered or it will get in the way of my success. When I attend PTI, the experience of being a student at a high tech school combined with living on my own will enrich my life and help me mature into the person that I wish to be.
